MOTS-c is a 16–amino-acid peptide encoded within the mitochondrial 12S rRNA gene — one of the first mitochondrial-derived peptides shown to act systemically as a “mitokine.” It is a major focus of metabolic-longevity research.

Research examines its activation of the AMPK energy-sensing pathway and its influence on glucose uptake and fatty-acid oxidation in skeletal-muscle models, effects often described as exercise-mimetic in the literature.
